Whether you travel often or just once in a while, you will agree that travelling is stressful. With escalating reports of the latest threat to travelers, especially air travelers, and the advent of the ‘security’ devices which leave little to the imagination, travelling has become ‘stress management’ hot topic.
So what is the solution? Choosing not to travel is one however, during those long winter months, the vision of a warm beach and a cool beverage are just too enticing for this option. Therefore, the pertinent question is one of how we can offset the inevitable stresses typically encountered when planning for, and engaging in a trip.
Due to my extensive travels as an expert in stress management and it’s related aspects, be they ‘workplace stress management’ to ‘personal stress management strategies’, I have learned how to remain calm and centered and minimized the ‘travel tantrums’ I see so many people having when things aren’t going their way! Factors such as long lines, bad weather, airline staff strikes in the midst of an itinerary, passport and visa issues, last minute changes at your destination, along with ungracious and outright rude and ignorant airline, immigration and customs personnel, all contribute to making an otherwise enjoyable and even wonderful journey into a nightmare!
Whether you are a frequent flyer or spend too much time at border crossings, or an occasional traveler, let’s look at 7 key insights and tips on how stress management can help you to stay and keep calm and composed, regardless of the travel challenges you encounter.
- Attitude is everything – this point is obvious yet if we understood and acted upon it, there would be no need for this article! Unfortunately, even though most of us ‘know better’, we do not necessarily ‘behave better’! For example, ask yourself how you how you behave when you are lined up at the airport and it isn’t moving as fast as you want it to, or when security decides to disassemble you or your things while doing their job. Do you take it personally and become rude and belligerent? Or do you recognize that it isn’t personal, and that even though it is frustrating, by choosing to remain calm and polite, your blood pressure will not sky rocket, and neither will the person you are dealing with get their back up and and further prolong the process. Recognize that by choosing the latter, you are acknowledging that you have no direct control over the situation, and that if your goal is to remain reach your destination feeling calm and happy, then you must remain non-reactive. The minute you ‘react’, you give your personal power away to that which you are reacting to, and suffer the consequences of feeling like a victim. So next time you find yourself in such a situation, remember to “Act, not React, and reward yourself by experiencing less stress while you maintain your composure and autonomy over your actions.
- Plan your Packing – typically, life has a way of getting busier prior to an upcoming trip. I have often heard colleagues and friends speak about how just hours before their trip, or the night before leaving, they literally opened a suitcase and threw in stuff, prior to leaving for the airport. Sometimes, this works however often, you either under pack, or as is more common, you over pack. One simple way to ensure you pack appropriately to your specific travel needs is to is to set out a suitcase in a convenient location and leave it open. Then whenever you pass by it, put something in it which you think you’ll need for the trip. Then, on the day before your trip, ‘unpack’ that which you will not need (we over pack by 50%), do a final check and shut and lock it up. I even move my suitcase near to the front door or even put it in the car the night before a trip. Thus, I leave home feeling organized and confident that I have not forgotten anything important.
- Plan for your ‘onboard’ experience – this tip speaks to airline travel when you are enclosed in a metal tube, hurtling through space at over 500 miles per hour! At this point, you have very few options except to rely on others, often the service staff onboard, for your comfort. That is, unless you have anticipated and prepared. When I travel by air, here is what I do:
- I pack my own ‘snack’ pack. I find that having good, nutritious food with me protects me from the all to often, ‘Oh, we didn’t pack your special meal request’ situation, or the ‘We know this is a four hour flight but we don’t serve meals anymore’. And if your flight is delayed or you missed a connection, this can turn into a veritable nightmare. This is especially so if you, like me, have special dietary requirements (I’m a vegetarian). Therefore, I always pack nuts, fruit, sandwiches and the like to ensure that I don’t rely on the airlines to take care of my needs.
- Bring with you, especially on longer flights, ear plugs, eye covers and comfortable warm socks or footwear. These allow me to create my own little world within which I can get rested despite the noise around me, the bright cabin and outside lights, or the cold air conditioning. I also always layer my clothing as in some cases, the plane may be too warm. Keep these in a small pouch and in a drawer with other ‘travel’ necessities which will making remembering to pack them easy.
- Reduce Jet Lag – to maximize your enjoyment at your destination, make sure you drink lots of water on board. For every 1 hour of flying, you need 8 ounces of water to rehydrate. And if you are parking of the ‘free’ alcohol, you can double this. Also, a few days prior to a long trip, I start taking Melatonin, a naturally occurring substance in your body which helps your sleep cycles. In addition, I use a homeopathic product called “No Jetlag, which I have found highly effective in cutting back the degree of jetlag I experience.
- Remember to move – sitting for hours in one place is not what our bodies were designed for. So make yourself get up and move around, stretch and generally get the body circulation going at least every 2 hours. You can even do some exercises while in your seat. The point is to help your body function optimally to offset fatigue and even illness due to travel.
- Preview your Destination Airport information – this is helpful in ensuring that you minimize any unwelcome surprises when you arrive at your destination airport. With the plethora of information on the internet, along with so many consumer forums, you can find out the layout of an airport, along with all the services available to you and the prices/payment methods/currencies. Taking 20 minutes to do this ahead of time will save you a lot of stress upon arrival.
- Breathe! – finally, another obvious but often overlooked point is simply to ‘breathe’! By this, I suggest that you learn to observe your breathing patterns when stressed. If you are like me, your breathing speeds up and becomes shallow. This will not help you if you need to stay calm and centered. So next time this begins to happen, consciously slow down your breathing and make your breaths longer and deeper. When we are triggered, this is a difficult thing to catch and do as we are in our ‘reactive’ mode, however, with a solid resolve on your part to watch for this, over time, it can be mastered! And the first person to benefit from this will be YOU!

- Food Sense – I know that you know what I am going to share with you here, as all of us have been exposed to information about what we need to eat more, and less off. Having become a heavily ‘doing’ oriented culture, we are almost guilty about ‘sleeping’, whether it is enough or too much. Often, we sacrifice sleep in order to fit more activities into our lives, arguing that they are ‘essential’. For a time, our bodies compensate for this error in judgment but ultimately, it will not be able to keep up and crash. By design, we are on average meant to have 9.5 hours of sleep a night in order for our bodies to properly metabolize toxins and rebuild cells and tissues to keep us healthy and harmonized. And paradoxically, when we have had sufficient sleep, we become more efficient and get more done, in less time. Certainly, food for thought.
- Exercise – along with the obvious fact that our bodies are machines which work best when moved or moving, realize that the type of movement and even the timing of movement are essential ingredients for proper exercise. Otherwise, exercise can create more stress, rather than decrease it. Latest research compiled by the National Health Institute of America, confirms that rigorous exercise must not be undertaken in the evening hours. This is because the body’s natural rhythm is to go into a calming, resting phase. Therefore, running or doing other highly stimulating exercise at that time puts you into a reverse cycle which impacts on your quality of sleep. The best exercise for the evening hours is anything which harmonizes and calms while still working out your muscles; exercises such as Tai Chi, Yoga and walking are excellent for this. Also be aware that you don’t do more harm than benefit when you choose an exercise such as running. If not properly learned and undertaken on the appropriate surface and in healthy environments (ie. Not running on concrete next to a busy thoroughfare), you can end up harming your body in the long term. This is because biologically, running is read by your body as an attempt to escape a predatory threat, which creates cortisol, a powerful hormone that ultimately, will harm rather than help the body.

Dealing with Guilt
Human as we are, we have faults and make mistakes. We harm other people deliberately or accidentally. We sometimes do not realize the need for the people around us in our everyday lives and frequently we feel guilty over it.
We have feelings of guilt for many reasons. We might feel guilty towards our partner. Failing to recall a specific and memorable day when the other spouse is prepared for it may cause feelings of shame and embarrassment.
We may feel guilty towards our kids. We may have promised them that we would go to one of the most important forthcoming football games he has, but then a crisis meeting was arranged at the office which we can’t break free from. In my own opinion, whatâs more essential is the fact that we recognized our errors after feeling guilty and focus on methods to say i’m sorry as well as make up for what we might have done.
Life is to do with establishing priorities. You should note that while one attempts to, we can’t please everyone and we make errors along the way. Naturally, try to avoid making the same slip-up over and over again.
